Nonverbal Intonation

Every language has its own intonation. Therefore, American English has its own intonation also. Intonation refers to the sound melody created by the voice going up (rising) and going down (falling). Every language has some nonsense syllables that use nonverbal intonation to relay very important information. Here are 7 examples of nonverbal intonation in American English.

Yes = uh ↑huh

 

I get it = ah ↑hah

 

Eureka = ah ↑ha!

 

No = uh ↓uh

 

No way = uh uh!

 

I don’t know = uh ↓uh ↓uh

 

Oops = uh ↓oh
